Growing for the future

In Tanzania today, most small farmers plant a single crop and made heavy use of chemical pesticides and fertilizers to grow it. These practices deplete soil nutrients, causing yields to dip lower over time. Meanwhile, rainfall in Tanzania has become less predictable, putting farmers’ livelihoods at even greater risk.

Mainsprings offers a way out of this downward spiral : an approach known as “restorative agriculture” that optimizes nutrients and rainfall and leads to a rich variety of fruits and vegetables, more abundant harvests, and a healthier, more resilient ecosystem.

Mainsprings staff have been learning, adapting, and sharing restorative agriculture practices since 2012 We learn from field experts, experiment on our own campuses to figure out what works, and then share effective practices with rural farmers from surrounding communities. We also offer our priority “Changemaker” families the seeds, tools, and access to markets they need to feed their families and lift themselves out of poverty.
